Turn into the Current Betty Crocker by Entering the 2009 Puyallup Fair Food Contests

Puyallup, WA – June 26, 2009 – You could be a Betty Crocker, Sandra Lee, or Emeril Lagasse in the making when you enter your special recipes in the various food contests at the 2009 Puyallup Fair. With a wide range of contests available, every culinary aficionado should have a creation or two to enter.

Some contests require pre-registration prior to the day you bring in your entry, while others do not. To review all rules and regulations, and to obtain the pre-registration form, download the premium book, available online at www.thefair.com. Click on Puyallup Fair, then Exhibit Entries. Then click Home Arts for all cooking contest rules.

The contests requiring pre-registration by Friday, Sept. 1, 2009 include:

C&H Sugar Parent-Child Peanut Butter Cookie Contest – A parent (mother, father, grandparent, legal guardian or step-parent) and child (6-16 years) will vie for the best peanut butter cookie recipe. The first place team wins $100, second place $50, and third place $25.
Pre-registration: Sept. 1, 2009
Deliver: Friday, Sept. 18 between 10 a.m. and noon
Judging:  1 p.m.

The Great American Spam Championship – There are two categories in this creative Spam contest:  Adults (ages 18 and up) and Kids (ages 7-17). First place honor in each category is $150, second place in both categories is $50, and third place is $25. Each winner will also receive a ribbon, an award certificate and an apron.
Winning recipes will go on to nationals, where the National Spam Grand Champion Prize is a trip to Waikiki Spam Jam, valued at $3,000, or $3,000 cash prize, and the National “Spam Kid Chef of the Year” Grand Prize is $2,000.
Pre-registration: Sept. 1, 2009
Deliver: Wednesday, Sept. 16 between 10 a.m. and noon
Judging:  1:00 p.m. – complete with Hawaiian entertainment!

Puyallup Fair Apple Pie Contest – Whether you start with a tart or sweet apple, the combination of flavors is what the judges are looking for in this pie contest. First prize is $100, second prize is $50, and third prize is $25.
Pre-registration: Sept. 1, 2009
Deliver: Monday, Sept. 21 between 10 a.m. and noon
Judging:  1 p.m.

Fair Scones Scone Contest – Add a handful of this and a pinch of that to one package of “The Original Famous Fair Scone and Shortcake Mix,” and you could go home with the blue ribbon in the Fair Scones Scone contest. The first place winner receives $125, a ribbon and gift basket. Second place receives $75 and third place $50, and both also receive a ribbon and gift basket.
Pre-registration: Sept. 1, 2009
Deliver: Wednesday, Sept. 23 between 10 a.m. and noon
Judging:  1 p.m.

Puyallup Fair’s Best Jam and Jelly Contest – Create your tastiest jam and/or jelly recipe, and you could win $75 for first place, $50 for second place, and $25 for third place honors.
Pre-registration by: Sept. 1, 2009
Deliver: Friday, Sept. 25 between 10 a.m. and noon
Judging:  1 p.m.


 Highlighted contests that do NOT have a pre-registration include:

Dillanos Coffee Biscotti Contest – Pull out your best ingredients and create a biscotti recipe that is perfect to dip in your Dillanos coffee. First place honoree receives $100, second place $50, and third place $25.
Deliver:  Wednesday, Sept. 9 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Dillanos Best Quick Bread Coffee Cake Contest – If you make a coffee cake that your friends and family request time and again, then you should enter this contest. The blue ribbon first place brings home $100, second place $50, and third place $25.
Deliver:  Wednesday, Sept. 9 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Fleischmann’s Yeast Bake For the Cure Baking Contests
For every entry, ACH Food Companies will contribute $10 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Themes and decorations are encouraged for your recipe using Fleischmann’s Yeast. Entries must not need refrigeration. The first placing winning recipes in both categories advance to grand prize judging for a $1,000 national award.
1st Category:  Yeast Bread of Any Type or Flavor - First place receives $150, second place receives $75, and third place $50. All three winners also receive a ribbon, an award certificate and an apron.
2nd Category:  “Batter Breads: No Kneading, No Kidding" –Qualify with any great bread recipe with NO multiple rise times (just one rise), and NO time spent kneading the dough. First place honoree receives $100, a blue ribbon, an award certificate and an apron.
Deliver:  Wednesday, Sept. 9 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Ghirardelli Chocolate Championship – Rich chocolaty delights are the focus of this contest. Enter a dessert or treat using at least one of Ghirardelli’s premium baking products. You could win $150 and a Ghirardelli chocolate gift basket for first place, $50 for second place, or a gift basket for third place.
Deliver: Monday, Sept. 14 between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Judging:  7:30 p.m.

Make It With Malt-O-Meal Cold Cereal Recipe Contest – Make any COLD food creation with any Malt-O-Meal brand cold cereal. Any entry not requiring refrigeration is welcome, from a hearty meal to a sweet treat dessert. First place winner receives $100, second place $50, and third place receives $25 in Malt-O-Meal coupons. Each winner also receives a ribbon, award certificate and apron. The first 20 contestants to enter will receive a Malt-O-Meal coupon.
Deliver:  Wednesday, Sept. 9 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Pillsbury Refrigerated Pie Crust “Two-Crust Fruit Pie” Championship Contest – Use Pillsbury’s handy rolled (not folded) Refrigerated Pie Crust and create a delicious two-crust fruit pie. The first place winner will also be in the running to receive a $1,000 award selected from all the first place winning recipes from Pillsbury’s contestants nationwide. Puyallup Fair first place honoree receives $200, a commemorative gift, ribbon, award certificate and Pillsbury apron, and a chance to win the national prize. Second place receives $100, and third place $50, and both receive a ribbon, certificate and apron.
Deliver:  Wednesday, Sept. 9 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Salsa Showdown – Make those taste buds sizzle with your special salsa recipe. It can be any fresh, healthful, easy to prepare, intensely flavored mixture of vegetables or fruits, herbs and spices. First place is $100, second place $50, and third place $25.
Deliver:  Thursday, Sept. 17 between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Judging:  7:30 p.m.

Wilton Decorated Cake Contests (Amateur) – If your amateur efforts in cake and cupcake decorating are worthy of a fine bakery’s fare, then, you should enter this contest. The first place decorated cake winner takes home $100, second place $50, and third place $25. The first place decorated cupcake winner takes home $50, second place $30, and third place $20.There are two classes:  cake and cupcake, and the first place winner in both classes also receives a certificate, plus a choice of one of the following:  Brownie Fun (latest Wilton publication), Gifts from the Kitchen book, or Cake Decorating Basics (DVD).
Deliver:  Wednesday, Sept. 9 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
